Object box 1: China and the U.S.

NCSS Thematic Strand: Culture
IL Social Science Standard:

STATE GOAL 17: Understand world geography and the effects of geography on society, with an emphasis on the United States.

17.A.2b Use maps and other geographic representations and instruments to gather information about people, places and environments.

Item:

Activity: Students will use the map to perform comparisons of China and the U.S. They will document the size of the countries and recreate scale maps that can be used for direct comparison between the two countries. The maps will include legends and labels for the capitals, major cities, and the number of people living in both countries.

15.D.2a Explain why people and countries voluntarily exchange goods and services.

Item:

Activity: Students will locate China and America on the map puzzle; they will form groups and explore the different ways (modes) and at least one route between where they live and China. The groups will be responsible for identifying the distance traveled and the amount of time required to make the entire journey. Each group will identify and report on at least one good or service exchanged between countries.

Object box 3:Music in China

18.A.3 Explain how language, literature, the arts, architecture and traditions contribute to the development and transmission of culture.

Item:

Activity: Students will take part in a KWL session about the uses of gongs in the Chinese culture. Any unanswered questions from the KWL session will be researched and reported by the students groups. After completion of the lesson, students will create a double-entry journal and write about their knowledge of gongs before and after the KWL and research.

Object box 4: Happy New Year China

Item:

Activity: Students will investigate the dates and meanings of the Chinese New Year. Each student will create a poster that represents what they feel the Chinese New Year represents. Each poster will be displayed in the classroom, also the students are to find out what sign they are according to the Chinese calendar, and include their sign on the poster.

Object box 5: Why eat this instead of that?

Item:

Activity: In groups, students will explore the main and customary dishes served in China, they will identify at least one reason for the meal choices in China (I.e. not many hamburgers, because cattle are not abundant) and create a posters displaying their findings.
